The 110th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War was commemorated in Zagreb

On Saturday, July 6, a commemoration was held at Mirogoj cemetery in Zagreb, followed by a Holy mass on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the assassination in Sarajevo and the First World War, which was attended by domestic and foreign guests from Austria, Croatia, France and the USA

The year 2024 marks the 110th anniversary of the horrific murder of HRH Archduke Franz Ferdinand and the Duchess Sophie in Sarajevo and thus the start of the First World War. On the occasion of this great anniversary, the Croatian Royal Council organised a commemoration at the monument-tomb of Croatian soldiers from the Great War 1914 - 1918. Members of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Croatia responded to the invitation, and a member of the Army orchestra performed a mirozov in honour of the fallen Croatian soldiers. In addition to members of the Armed Forces of Croatia, the event was attended by the French military envoy to Croatia, Colonel Amar Ouali, members of the US armed forces and other guests from Austria and the US.

The program was led by Mr. Marko Banfić, who delivered the welcoming speeches. after a minute of silence and the Mirozov for all those who died in the First World War, the first speech was given by Filip Katanić, historian and author of the books Galicia 1914 and The Last Days of Chivalry, Cavalry battles of the First World War and Croats. In his speech, he covered global military history, as well as the lesser-known history of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The second speaker was our distinguished guest Charles A. Coulombe, historian and theologian, famous for his books and works on the Church, the Habsburgs and the blessed Emperor Karl. In his speech, he explained the efforts towards peace of the then rulers, the unfair portrayal and dehumanisation of Franz Ferdinand as the goal of justifying the assassination, and the efforts of Blessed Karl and others to achieve peace. The last speaker was C. Ante Brešić pl. Mikulić, historian and author of works on the subject of trialism, monarchism, history of the KuK Monarchy. In his speech, which he began with a quote from Blessed Ivan Merz, he showed how nationally close the war and the Assassination were to the Croats and other Slavs of the Monarchy, how much their bond and hope was in Franz Ferdinand, and about the reasons for the Assassination itself and the relations of the Black Hand, Dimitrijević Apis and the Revolutionary Defense with Young Bosnia. At the end of the event, the guests laid wreaths and paid their respects in front of the monument-tomb.

In the afternoon in the Greek Catholic co-cathedral of St. Cyril and Methodius, the divine liturgy of St. John Chrysostom was held. In the beautifully decorated historicistic co-cathedral, which is also adorned by the Habsburg secular throne, prayers were offered for those who died in the Sarajevo assassination HRH Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Duchess Sophia, as well as all the Croats who died in the Great War of 1914 - 1918. The divine liturgy was magnificent with the number of priests and seminarians who celebrated and accompanied her. The Greek-Catholic community in Croatia was especially tied to the House of Habsburg-Lothringen, which from the time of Queen Maria Theresa granted them rights in Croatia and guaranteed their survival and development, thereby enriching our Catholic tradition.
